Three of the finest country women's water polo players have recently returned from an overseas venture where they pla
yed in two tournaments representing AustraliaAfter competing in the State Country Championships the WA State Country Team was selected to travel to Newcastle in May to compete in the Australian Country Championships. The tournament was hosted by the NSW Hunter Hurricanes. The WA Women performed exceptionally against some extremely tough competition, which included ACT, ADF, NSW A and B, QLD, ADF and Victoria.
After going through the round games undefeated and convincingly defeating Qld in the semi final earlier in the day, the WA Team advanced to the Gold Medal play off against NSW coming away with a Silver Medal. It has been nearly 10 years since WA last won a medal so it was a very memorable moment and well deserved after such an impressive effort.
From this Tournament players were then selected to represent the Australian Country Women's Water Polo Team which travelled to Europe from August 21st until 7th September. Tournaments were held in Amsterdam and Hengelo in the Netherlands. With the Greece tournament unfortunately being cancelled.WA had 3 players selected, all from the south west, Emma Morelli, Natasha O'Neill and Alice Rotheram. Former National League player Gerry Morelli was named as the Australian Country Women's Coach. Against some extremely tough opposition, which included players from the Netherlands Gold medal winning team from the 2008 Olympics, the Australian Country girls performed well with their impressive efforts resulting in them coming 2nd in the first Het Y tournament and 3rd in the later Hengelo tournament.
The players had a short rest and are now back into the Summer Season with Alice Rotheram and Tash O’Neill both travelling to Perth to play for Triton in the Premier League Metro competition.
